Late May 2007 Flamingo Report
Despite some high east winds this week, we’ve managed to get out and fish. Went down to Everglades National Park on Monday, May 22, and ended the day with 10 snook , 3 reds and about 10 trout.

We started the day sight fishing for redfish on the flats. After about half hour of poling we got into the reds. The fish were tailing, waking and some were laid up in pot holes. We had two fish eat flies, but shortly spit them out. So we decided to put the fly rods away and throw some plastic baits, but of course, as soon as we got the spinning rods out the bite turned off, but not for long. We pushed a bit more and finally got into the snook bite. The fish were all hanging around the pot holes so we started blind casting, and bang! A double hook up, both fish around 25-27 inches. The snook bite lasted about an hour or so.

By then, the wind had really picked up and we had no choice but to hide in some lee. The bite slowed down mid-day, but it picked back up later in the day. We hit another spot and managed to pick up some nice trout, some were in the 24 inch range. Blind casting jerk baits we picked up a couple of more reds and some more snook.

All in all was a nice day. So, despite what the weatherman says, get out there and do some fishing.

If you want to get into some of this action, give me a call and I will get you HOOKED UP!

May 2007, Fishing Report
As we transition from spring to summer, the fishing in South Florida will begin to improve by the day. Permit started their migration into the shallow grass flats and bonefish started schooling up. Also, the fist pods of migrating Tarpon started showing up last week, any time now, those Tarpon will be here for good and it’s not unusual to have multiple hookups of fish in the 100 pound class. These Tarpon will take flies, soft plastics and of course natural live bait.

On a scouting trip last week, with friend Capt. Raul Montoro, we caught a permit that bottomed out a 30 pound Boga, the fish must have weighed in the mid 30’s to low 40’s. We also went 1 for 1 on bonefish after seeing about 300 fish.

If it a flats grand slam you desire, (Tarpon, Bonefish and Permit) late spring and early summer it’s the time to do it. The calm summer winds in combination with warm water temperatures will allow to fish for these species the entire day. If something a bit less technical is what you are looking for, sight fishing for sharks and barracudas might be the ticket. Sharks well over 100 pounds can be targeted, both on fly and light tackle.

So, if you are looking for some light tackle action, whether is bonefish, permit, tarpon or sharks, give me a call and I will get you HOOKED UP! 305-807-5296
